In contrast to other non-private institutions in Tokyo, the university was formed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government rather than the national government. It is ranked #1001-1200 in the QS World University Rankings 2026.
The Tokyo Metropolitan University Scholarship is designed for high-achieving students who want to pursue graduate studies at Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU). International students pursuing Master’s and PhD degrees can apply for a fully supported scholarship at Tokyo Metropolitan University through the Tokyo Global Partner Scholarship Program.
