Congratulations are in order for Princess Edna Tafari Makonnen of Ethiopia and her husband, Jamal Akil Robinson, as the pair announce that they have welcomed their daughter, Princess Eliana Rose Robinson. Edna, who is the great-granddaughter of Haile Selassie, the last Emperor of Ethiopia, welcomed the new addition to her family on 17 July at 2:28 pm.
The new baby Princess joins an illustrious line of royal heritage, with the Makonnen family said to trace their lineage back to the biblical King David and the Queen of Sheba. That royal heritage is of vital importance to Princess Edna, with the new mother keen to raise her baby so that the young Eliana ‘understand[s] the importance of our family history, that she comes from a lineage of Kings and Queens.’
It’s no wonder that the connection between generations was on Princess Edna’s mind. The Ethiopian royal revealed to the magazine that her mother, Aster Abitow, gifted her a collection of Edna’s old baby clothes, which the Princess now intends to pass on to her own daughter. Speaking of what it means to welcome a new baby into the world, Princess Edna told Ebony about her dreams for motherhood in a world that she admits ‘won’t always be easy’.
