Ethiopia Doubles AU Budget Contribution as Bloc’s Financial Struggles Continue

Ethiopia has voluntarily agreed to nearly double its annual contribution to the budget of the African Union (AU), upgrading its scale of assessment to the Tier-One category as the continental bloc finds itself in dire need of financing.

The decision was announced during the 49th AU Ordinary Session of the Executive Council held in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia has thus far contributed as a tier-two country, carrying an annual assessment of less than USD 10 million alongside the likes of Kenya. Ethiopia’s assessed regular AU budget contribution at the end of 2025 was nearly USD eight million, which it has fully paid, according to AU documents reviewed by The Reporter.

The recently announced upgrade doubles the assessed contribution figure to USD 15 million and places Ethiopia on level footing with countries like Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco, and Angola in the first tier.
