Deaths from conflicts around the world have almost doubled in the past year to reach the highest levels this century, according to a new report released today. While Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 captured the attention of the western media, other conflicts have received far less coverage, including a brutal two-year war in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia that ended with a peace deal in November 2022, and ongoing instability in Mali and Myanmar.
According to the latest edition of the Global Peace Index, published today by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), the number of deaths from conflicts around the world almost doubled last year – in large part because of those two wars.
