Ethio telecom, Djibouti Telecom and Sudatel Sign Deal for Regional Fiber Corridor

Ethio telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel Group signed a tripartite agreement on Wednesday to develop the Horizon Fiber Initiative, a high-capacity terrestrial optical fiber network linking submarine cable landing stations in Djibouti through Ethiopia to Sudan.

The project is intended to create a more resilient and diversified connectivity corridor across the Horn of Africa, reducing reliance on Red Sea subsea cables that have proven vulnerable amid geopolitical tensions and physical disruptions, even as demand for data traffic continues to rise.

Ethio telecom reported revenues of 85.02 billion Birr, in the first half of the 2025/26 fiscal year, covering July through December 2025, a 37 percent increase from a year earlier and 81.1 percent of its internal target. The growth was driven by higher data consumption, expanding use of its mobile money platform, Telebirr, and international services. The operator said it generated $88.19 million in foreign currency during the period.

Djibouti Telecom, the state-owned monopoly, continues to benefit from the country’s position as a regional connectivity hub. International wholesale business has historically accounted for a large share of its revenues, nearly 40 percent of its roughly $205 million turnover in 2023. More recent financial disclosures for 2025 and 2026 are limited, though telecommunications remains a key pillar of Djibouti’s broader economic growth strategy.
