UMW aims to fund 15 students in their first year of the new program. UMW also provides merit scholarships, such as the full-ride Washington Scholars program for Virginia students and the Alvey Scholarships for out-of-state students. UMW’s Tuition Promise offers full tuition to Virginia students who qualify for Pell grants, making it a standout in-state college choice.
The University of Mary Washington (UMW) has officially opened its admissions portal on August 1, 2025, inviting students to apply for Fall 2026 enrollment and introducing one of the most exciting funding opportunities for aspiring scientists across the country: the Piscopo Rodgers Science Fellows Program. This fellowship, supported by a historic $36 million gift from the late Irene Piscopo Rodgers ’59, a pioneer in electron microscopy, is intended to enhance the influence of students who are passionate about STEM areas. UMW intends to choose 15 outstanding first-year students for this prestigious scholarship in its inaugural year.
The University of Mary Washington is dedicated to making the world a better place through breakthrough scholarship and an inclusive community. As a public liberal arts institution, we are using the power of the liberal arts to educate the next generation of problem solvers. “UMW should be the first choice for undergraduate students interested in a career in science, whether it’s in medicine, biology, environmental sciences, data science, math, chemistry, or physics,” said Director of Undergraduate Research Elizabeth Lewis. “We offer unparalleled funding for these areas, giving students the opportunity to work side-by-side with faculty on real-world research, co-author papers, and show their work.”
