The African Union Commission signed a memorandum of understanding with Google aimed at advancing artificial intelligence and strengthening digital capacity across the continent, in what officials described as a step toward building Africa’s “sovereign” AI ecosystem.
The agreement was formalized on February 17 at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa. It was signed by Commissioner Lerato D. Mataboge, who oversees Infrastructure and Energy at the Commission, and Charles Njenga Murito, Google’s Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Government Affairs and Public Policy.
According to the Commission, the partnership is aligned with the African Union’s Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy and its Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa (2020–2030). The collaboration will focus on expanding AI, digital and cloud infrastructure, developing AI talent and human capital, supporting research and innovation centers, strengthening entrepreneurship and MSME ecosystems, and promoting policy and governance frameworks for responsible AI.
