Air India has appointed Tewolde Gebremariam, the former Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, succeeding Campbell Wilson in one of the most closely watched leadership moves in global aviation this year.
The appointment, announced on August 5, 2026, places one of Africa’s most decorated airline executives at the helm of India’s flagship carrier as it navigates an ambitious expansion under the Tata Group.
Who Is Tewolde Gebremariam?
Gebremariam is no stranger to turning a national carrier into a global contender. He served as Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines from 2011 until his resignation in March 2022, a period during which the airline transformed from a strong regional player into Africa’s largest and most profitable carrier.
Under his leadership, Ethiopian Airlines launched Vision 2010 and later Vision 2025, strategic roadmaps that aimed to multiply fleet size, destinations, and revenue. The airline exceeded those targets years ahead of schedule. By 2018, it had already hit the fleet and destination numbers it had planned to reach by 2025.
