Brazil’s Long Road Into Ethiopia’s Food Market Reaches First Shipment

Brazil’s push to expand agricultural trade with Ethiopia has moved from nearly two years of negotiations to commercial orders, with Ethiopian private companies already importing Brazilian products under a newly implemented market-access arrangement, the Brazilian ambassador said.

The first shipments have yet to arrive, however, marking an early stage in a trade relationship that Brazil is seeking to expand through a newly established permanent office of the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil) in Addis Ababa.

“The agreement was signed and is being implemented now,” Jandyr Ferreira dos Santos, Brazil’s ambassador to Ethiopia, told Birrmetrics on Wednesday during the inauguration of the ApexBrasil office in Addis Ababa. “The Ethiopian private sector is importing Brazilian products.”

The comments clarify the status of an agricultural market opening first reported by Reuters in April, when Ethiopia authorised Brazilian exports of 17 agricultural products. The products include beef, pork and poultry and their products, dairy products, fish, animal-feed products, live cattle and animal genetic material.
