Ethiopia’s ambitious renewable energy infrastructure drive has taken a monumental leap forward. The civil engineering team behind the Koisha Power Plant Project has successfully finalized the first phase of structural concrete filling for its powerhouse, marking a critical turning point in one of the nation’s most vital hydro-development endeavors.
Positioned strategically as the third-largest power generation scheme in the country—trailing only the flagship Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the Gibe-3 power plant—Koisha stands as a pillar of Ethiopia’s long-term energy security and industrial transformation.
Engineering an Energy Giant from the Ground Up
Before the first batch of concrete could ever be poured, teams faced immense geographical and logistical hurdles. According to project civil engineer Yitegesu Ayalew, construction crews had to excavate and remove more than 7 million cubic meters of loose soil and hard rock just to prepare the foundation and stabilize the dam’s embankment zones.
